NXP Semiconductors plans to invest over €90m in wireless chip research and development, to make wireless-USB a mainstream technology for consumer electronic devices.
NXP has expanded its existing research centre in Singapore to carry out the development work on W-USB technologies.
Wireless USB is based on ultra-wideband (UWB) technology, supported by the WiMedia Alliance.
With speeds of up to 480Mbit/s over distances up to 10 metres, the technology could out-perform Bluetooth and WiFi transfer rates between consumer devices.
It also eliminates the need to connect electronic devices with untidy wires.
The first wireless USB products could be released this year unless interoperability issues slow their introduction.
