Intel promotes Wireless USB 1.1 and USB 3.0

Although the first wireless USB products have only just started shipping, Intel has already started working on Wireless USB 1.1.

The new standard refines the protocol and improves its efficiency. It moves wireless USB’s operating frequency to 6Ghz and above, as well as supporting the 3-4Ghz bands of WUSB 1.0.

The new specification is also expected to increase data transfer rates to 1Gbps, and simplifies device bonding by means of contacting each other.

The first patch to WUSB is expected in late 2008.

Intel and others have also formed a group promoting the USB 3.0 standard, which is expected to transfer data at speeds up to 4.8Gbit/s. This is ten times faster than USB 2.0’s 480MBit/s.

The standard will be backwards-compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1.

USB 3.0 will be optimised for low power and improved protocol efficiency.
USB 3.0 ports and cabling will have both copper and optical cable capabilities, to enable even higher speed in the future.
