Consumer electronics company Sony is planning to distribute a USB-connected rechargeable battery power supply unit, called Energy LINK, in the US this summer.

The device functions as a power adapter, portable power supply and battery charger. It will be shipped with a pair of Cycle Energy AA batteries included, which fit into the unit to be charged when Energy LINK is plugged into a computer. The batteries will fully charge in 3 hours.

The two batteries can either be removed for use in another device, or the Energy LINK unit, with the batteries still inside, can be connected directly to gadgets that get their power via their own USB port such as MP3 players or mobile phones.

Energy LINK will retail at around $35.
