Elgato Systems has announced Turbo.264, a USB stick which serves as a hardware encoder to convert video files to the MP4 format for iPod, Apple TV, and Sony PSP.

Mac videos can be converted singly or in a batch. Turbo.264 drops the converted files into iTunes ready to synch automatically with an iPod or Apple TV.

Turbo.264 can act as a co-processor for a Mac, taking over the work of encoding videos to the MP4 format and freeing up the Mac’s processor for other taks.

The device speeds exports by a factor of 4 on an Intel Core 2 Duo up to a factor of 10 on a Power PC G4. The rate of acceleration depends on the Mac processor type.

Turbo.264 includes Elgato’s video conversion software, eliminating the need to buy additional software to convert videos.

Turbo.264 is available from Elgato’s online shop, priced at US$99.95.
