The Open Mobile Terminal Platform (OMTP) has agreed that micro-USB should be the standard for mobile phone connections.

The OMTP includes network operators, and manufacturers such as Nokia, Samsung, Motorola, Sony Ericsson and LG.

The OMTP has also recommended that Micro-USB port should be used to stream media including SD and HDTV; connect to a headset or car kit; act as a modem and provide the interface for firmware flashes.

Micro-USB, which was introduced by the USB implementers Forum eight months ago, is around half the height of a Mini-USB connector, making it more compatible with the ongoing miniaturisation of electronic devices.

The move to one standard will reduce the number of cables needed for mobile data connectivity, benefiting both consumers and industry. It could also have environmental benefits as it would eliminate the need for a new charger to be distributed with every phone.

The Chinese government has also recently selected micro-USB as the future national standard for phone chargers.
