Elgato Systems has released the Turbo.264 USB hardware encoder which converts video files to high quality H.264 (MP4) format for iPod, Apple TV, and Sony PSP.
The device accelerates exports by a factor of 4 on an Intel Core 2 Duo up to a factor of 10 on a Power PC G4.
Turbo.264 acts as a virtual co-processor, dealing with the software conversion of video files and leaving the Macintosh free for other tasks. The device supports all Macs with USB 2.0.
Turbo.264 features video conversion software by Elgato which allows videos to be dragged and dropped into the application. Files can be converted to iPod Standard, iPod High, Apple TV, or Sony PSP.
Batch conversions and exports of unprotected DVD content (VOB files) are supported by Turbo.264, which also accelerates exports from Macintosh video applications, including iMovie, QuickTime Pro, Final Cut Pro, and EyeTV.
Turbo.264 is priced at US$99.95 and is available in the Elgato Online Shop.
