hField Technologies has launched the Wi-Fire, Mac-compatible, USB Wi-Fi antenna, which provides access up to 1,000 feet away from a base station.
Wi-Fire is a directional, high-gain antenna which works with any 802.11b or g access point. With its 1,000 foot range it works at up to three the range provided by Apple’s built-in AirPort card.
The Wi-Fire measures 3 x 4 x 3/8 inches and can be folded away when not required. It can clip to a laptop screen while in use or rest on any flat surface.
The antenna comes with Wi-Fire Connection Manager software which reveals all available networks in the area. It can be used with both Mac and Windows.
The Wi-Fire antenna is ideal for workers on the move, providing Internet access from hotels and airports, or for home and business use where signal strength is poor.
According to hField’s website, the antenna was developed by an engineering student who was unable to connect to his university’s Wi-Fi from his off-campus apartment.
The Wi-Fire USB antenna is priced at $79.
