Intel has revealed part of the draft specification for USB 3.0, which is expected to enable data transfer speeds of up to 4.8Gbps, compared with the 480Mbps provided by USB 2.0.

The technology targets the PC, consumer and mobile markets, where digital media and its appetite for larger pipelines, is becoming increasingly commonplace.

The Extensible Host Controller Interface (xHCI) draft specification has only been made available to members of the USB 3 Promoter Group, which includes chipmakers and hardware manufacturers such as HP, Microsoft, NEC, NXP Semiconductors and Texas Instruments.

Intel is promoting USB 3.0 as the industry standard for the connection of HD media devices.

The company expects to release the next xHCI draft specification by the end of this year.
