Tyco Electronics Corp has announced a Micro-USB connector with the smallest footprint currently available in USB interconnects.

The connector will enable the further miniaturisation of portable devices such as mobile phones, digital cameras and portable music players

It meets the standard specified by the USB Implementers Forum in January 2007, which supports the USB On-The-Go supplement allowing communication between portable devices without going through a host.

The connector features an innovative latch mechanism which helps prevent accidental plug removal.

The product also features a minimum extraction force of 8N, after its rated 10,000 mating cycles. It is RoHS compliant and receptacle profiles on the circuit board measure just 2.4mm.

Receptacles and cable assemblies that support USB On-The-Go are also available.

Tyco Electronics Corp was spun off from Tyco International and became a separate, publicly traded company at the end of June.
