Edimax USB Adapter provides 802.11n speeds

Permalink: Edimax USB Adapter provides 802.11n speeds

Although the 802.11n wireless standard is still waiting for certification by the Wi-Fi Alliance, Edimax is marketing the EW-7718UN Draft N 2.0 USB Adapter, which can provide significantly faster data transfer rates.

Draft N relates to the 802.11n Wi-Fi standard which will replace 802.11a/b/g. The standard uses a new modulation technique called MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) to provide the faster wireless data rates increasingly needed for streaming high-definition media.

Draft N provides a maximum theoretical transfer rate of 300Mbit/s, with a typical throughput of 74Mbit/s. It also operates at a greater range than the previous standard - up to 75 metres indoors and 250 meters outside.

The Edimax EW-7718UN is a USB stick with a white casing. It comes packaged with an extension cable, so the device can sit on a desk for easy access. Software and drivers are also included.
