Gefen introduces wireless USB extender

Gefen has released a wireless USB 2.0 extender which will connect with up to four peripheral devices up to 100 feet away from a computer.

The extender uses 802.11 wireless technology and therefore should not interfere with other wireless technology, such as local Wi-Fi networks and cordless phones.

The extender is compatible with Windows XP/Vista, Mac OS X, and Linux operating systems without the need to install USB drivers.

It is designed to be easy to setup – the transmitter simply connects to a USB port on a CPU via a short cable. Peripherals are then connected to the receiver which acts as a four-port hub.

Both the transmitter and receivers operate off 5 Volt power supplies.

Gefen’s wireless USB extender is available now, priced at around $399.99.

  1. Wow, $399, 4 ports? I really think I’ll have to pass on that “deal”. A $100 brick computer, some free usb server software, and I can have as many ports on WiFi as I need at 25% of the price.

Oh, and the brick could offload mundane tasks like print queues, video motion detection, etc.
