PayPal, the online-payments provider, is considering using USB tokens embedded with smart card technology to enhance e-commerce security for its customers.

PayPal is collaborating with smart card vendor Gemalto on the USB devices.

An announcement by Gemalto on its deal to supply tokens to Paypal is expected in June.

PayPal is also considering other types of authentication tokens and has launched a trial of handheld password generators, supplied by VeriSign of the US.

The password generators produce a six-digit code every 30 seconds, which customers enter when they log into their PayPal or eBay accounts. PayPal is a subsidiary of eBay.
