Ofcom deregulates UWB

Previous regulation of the Ultra Wideband (UWB) spectrum will come to an end - allowing technologies using short-range wireless connectivity to no longer require a licence.
The Wireless Telegraphy (Ultra Wideband Equipment Exemption) Regulations 2007 will come into effect on August 13th, ending all licensing requirements for UWB devices.
The expectation is that this will allow explosive growth in wireless USB technologies, which could then be used to network a host of devices in the home together.
UWB at present is able to carry large amounts of data - but only over a short range, such as 2 gigabits a second over 30 metres. This makes it ideal for home connectivity.
The deregulation comes as the European Union is seeking to push for universal standards, with member countries expected to pass similar regulation in the near future.
UWB products are already being developed in US and Japanese markets. The movement to deregulation is expected to allow Europe to both embrace the technology as well as manufacturers to compete in a single global market.
