According to market researcher In-Stat, USB 3.0, also known as SuperSpeed USB, will begin shipping in 2009 with a full deployment expected in 2010.

With an actual throughput of 3 gigabits per second USB 3.0 deserves its SuperSpeed title.

In comparison, high-speed USB 2.0 delivers a maximum transfer rate of just 480 megabit per second.

USB 3.0 will be backward-compatible and provide the same plug-and-play capabilities as its predecessor, while lowering power consumption.

In-Stat expects nearly 4 billion USB devices to ship in 2012, compared with 2.6 billion in 2007, driven by the integration of the technology in consumer electronic devices.

The USB 3.0 promoter group was formed in 2007, in order to provide fast data transfer rates in the PC, consumer and mobile markets.

The group included Intel Corporation, Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, Texas Instruments, NEC and NXP Semiconductors.
