Newer Technology has started to distribute the NewerTech USB 2.0 Universal Drive Adapter.

The USB adapter cable provides a simple and cost-effective way to transfer data between hard drives via USB Plug-N-Play. The cable was recently announced at Macworld Expo and is available for an introductory price of $24.95.

The device allows any hard drive (2.5in, 3.5in, or 5.25in) or optical drive (standard IDE/ATA/ATAPI 40 pin or Serial-ATA) to be connected via USB with any computer using Mac OS 9.2 or higher, Linux 2.4.X, or Windows 2000 or higher.

It enables old drives to be used on an as needed basis for emergency access should a problem occur with a computer. The adapter also enables the transfer of data from drives removed from a failed computer.

The device is ideal for file transfer after the upgrade of an internal hard drive, backing up and storing file archives, and accessing data and interfacing with stored backup drives.

The adapter works with all hard drive brands and removable media drives, such as Iomega Zip. It provides a USB 2.0 transfer speed of up to 480Mbps and is also USB 1.1 compatible.

No software is required for the use of the adapter with an Apple/Mac computer running OS 8.6 or higher (including any version of OS X). A CD is included with the drivers required to use with Windows based systems.
