According to a survey by secure USB specialist, BlockMaster, 40% of the 100 office workers surveyed said they had lost a USB stick, while 64% said they had left a drive unprotected in a PC.

It seems that office workers are poorly informed about security in the workplace, as 30% of those surveyed said they didn’t know if the USB sticks they used were secure or not.

With the growing use of USB sticks, security is a major issue, especially as around 20 million are lost each year.

Daniel Östner, CEO, BlockMaster said: ”A careless attitude towards USB security appears to be rife amongst British workers, and it means organisations are extremely vulnerable to the threat of data breaches, where IP could become compromised and reputations damaged”.

In response to this problem BlockMaster has incorporated an Authorised Autorun feature in its SafeStick and SafeConsole, which should protect organisations from malicious attacks by malware such as the Conficker worm.

The device can also be configured to ensure that certain file formats are not stored.

The company plans to reveal SafeConsole 3.3, the management software for SafeStick, at InfoSecurity Europe this year.

Existing SafeConsole customers are eligible for an update.
