Computer peripherals manufacturer, Plextor, has introduced the PX-HDTV500U Mini Digital HDTV Receiver, a USB-based device which provides over-the-air HDTV programming to a computer.

The two-part antenna/software system can pick up both analog and HD signals. When used with Microsoft’s Media Center software it allows for PVR and time shifting. It will receive video in MPEG-2 in either a 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratio and can pick up HD signals from a range of 50 miles.

While the system is intended primarily for use with notebook computers, it will work with any USB 2.0-equipped computer.

The PX-HDTV500U Mini Digital HDTV Receiver device retails at around $99 and will be distributed from April 9.

  1. Nice gadget, but not very useful in over the air hdtv reception. It will pull in only the strongest signals around. If you live more than 10 miles from the transmitting towers get yourself the real thing, not this fancy toy
