Microsoft plans USB StartKey for Windows

Microsoft is developing a new product known as ‘StartKey’. The product will work on USB sticks and flash-storage devices such as SD memory cards, allowing Windows users to carry their Windows and Windows Live settings with them.
The company is developing the devices for both developed and emerging markets, and expects to launch a beta version before the end of the year.
Microsoft is aiming to build an end-to-end StartKey environment, including system software on the flash devices, and a software development kit which will allow third-party developers to create applications for the product.
Microsoft entered into an agreement with data storage specialist, SanDisk in May 2007, and StartKey seems to have grown from this partnership.
Microsoft announced plans for software to replace the U3 Smart Technology integrated into SanDisk flash devices. The U3 technology enabled files, applications and related settings to be stored on the USB stick.
StartKey will make these flash devices more focused on Windows. They will be customised to plug into Windows machines, allowing users to carry settings for desktop wallpaper, icons etc, and turn any PC into their own, personalised workspaces.
