USB Stick loss could prompt tighter Government security

Credant Technologies believes that the loss of a USB stick, containing information on the British Navy’s manoeuvres and staff, could prompt the Government to introduce more stringent security rules.
On Sunday the Guardian newspaper reported that the USB stick had been found in a Belfast car park and offered to the press.
After the newspaper rejected it, the stick was handed in at a local police station.
There is speculation that it was lost by personnel from a Hunt class mine counter-measure ship.
Sean Glynn, product manager with Credant Technologies said: “With high capacity USB sticks, capable of storing more data than a DVD, on sale in high street outlets for less than ten pounds, it’s clear that the data genie is now well and truly out of the bottle.
“It’s against this backdrop that we think it’s time for the Government to move on from its best practice approach for its many Departments and Agencies on IT security, and make encryption of all private data mandatory.”
